So you have a CV that you feel shows what you can do and have applied to as many relevant jobs as you can find - it’s possible that you now have some interviews to tackle. If you have never had one before, interviews can seem very daunting and difficult. You may wonder how you’re supposed to act or what you’re supposed to say.
We have some advice on how to make sure your job interview is as successful as possible.
Know what you’re getting into
It’s important to know as much as possible before entering the room for your interview. Google the company and role, read through the job specification until you understand it fully, and be prepared to answer questions on everything you have researched.
Look like you belong
Another thing to research is what you are supposed to wear, or you can ask your contact at the company ahead of the interview. Some offices like their employees to wear suits, some are more casual, and things get much more confusing if you’re interviewing for, for example, a manual labour job.
When in doubt, dress up as nice and professional as possible. Then you can get a feel for what people actually wear in the workplace and adjust your look when you hopefully start working.
Don’t be late
This is one of the most crucial aspects of attending a job interview - do not under any circumstances be late. It shows a lack of respect and care, and can lose you a job you’re really perfect for.
Be a bit early, maybe 15-20 minutes, and wait for your appointed interview time somewhere close to the workplace or in their lobby if possible. It’s much better to seem eager than careless.
Take your time
It’s completely normal to be nervous during job interviews, and many still get nervous years and years into their careers. The important thing is that you seem confident and answer the interviewer’s questions as well as you can.
If you feel nervous, take a breath or two before answering a question. Think through your answer quickly before actually voicing it. Make sure your potential future employer sees the true you.

This is very often the final question of any job interview. It’s great to actually have a couple of relevant and well thought out questions at this point as it shows your genuine interest, but here are some basic ones you can also ask:
- What is the working atmosphere like here?
- Which management style do you use?
- When can I expect to hear from you?
Making use of this advice should set you up nicely to have a great job interview. However many things need to come together in order for you to get an offer - don’t get discouraged if you don’t get one on the first try. For many it can take a good number of interviews to find the right fit and the key is in growing and getting more confident as you go.
