Beat Exam Stress and Stay Focused

Hey guys! I’ve just recently finished all my AS exams, and I can tell you this feeling of relief is unreal! During exams this year I learnt a little which I’d like to share.

 

Overcome Exam Stress

It goes without saying that I was ridiculously stressed during this period, but stress didn’t help me revise OR allay my nerves. If you’re ever feeling overwhelmed and stressed like me, I’d strongly advise to just give yourself some “me” time. Time where you can relax and do something you enjoy without thinking of the pressure of exams. For me, it was watching a favourite TV show or just simply letting my imagination free whilst listening to my favourite music. This really helped me feel refreshed and eased my mind.

 

Exam Revision Tips

Another tip for avid procrastinators like myself; make a timetable with a set amount of time to revise for each subject. Also when it comes to phones and laptops – items that are guaranteed to divert your attention – there are apps and websites that will help you stay focused on revision. My personal favourite is “Forest: Stay focused, be present”. This app is available for both Apple and Android and it allowed me to concentrate on my work, and grow a cute little forest of my own at the same time. I’d definitely advise checking it out!

 

For those of you who, like me, cannot revise without music, I suggest listening to instrumentals to prevent you being distracted by lyrics. However if you love lyrics, try listening to music in a different language. You have lyrics BUT you are able to focus on your work. Doing this myself I discovered the world of K-pop (Korean music). Not only did I find awesome music, which allowed me to focus, but I also found something that I’m very passionate about, and I’m now going to pick up the language! (Artists I like are EXO, BTS and Zion T.)

 

A very important tip is to always put your health – physical and mental – above all else. I cannot stress how important it is to look after yourself, especially during a time where you can be very vulnerable. Make sure you’re eating and drinking properly and getting enough sleep. Exams are important, but you’re MORE important. Please do remember to put yourself first.

 

On Exam Day

On exam days, try to surround yourself with people who aren’t anxious or stressed. In the past I had friends who used to be very stressed and nervous before exams, and this then rubbed off on me, and suddenly I lost my confidence. I’d advise to surround yourself with ‘good vibrations’.

 

A final tip for those who lack motivation. Find a quote that inspires you, and put it somewhere that you’ll see it everyday, (for me this was my phone’s lock screen). This will help give you that motivation and drive to keep on going to achieve your goals, and it’s now a habit of mine to keep a quote as my lock screen and change it when I feel I need a re-boot.
